In case you haven’t heard or seen all over social media, singer, dancer, and absolute icon Britney Spears has been stuck in a court-sanctioned conservatorship for the past 13 years, and fans are determined to help her out of it. If you don’t know what a conservatorship is, it basically means that Britney’s father has complete control and ownership over the popstar’s finances, estate, and career. She is essentially a morbid, modern-day version of Rapunzel, trapped in her Thousand Oaks mansion by her controlling father.

According to The New York Times, Britney's conservatorship has been extended to at least 2021, and the singer’s requests—including permanently removing her father from his role—will not be approved or altered until next February. She refuses to continue her career until she is set free.

Britney’s extremely eerie and strange Instagram posts have initiated further speculation and analysis by her fans. The highly popular Podcast “Britney’s Gram” decodes all of her captions and pictures one by one, desperately trying to pick at Britney’s isolated brain.
Hulu recently came out with a new documentary “Framing Britney Spears,” and the film really captures Britney’s story from immense fame and rapid popularity to the media’s role in her mental downfall and the recent concern for her freedom. Thus, the #FreeBritney movement came alive.

Fans have also gone out to the streets and protested on Britney's behalf, demanding an end to her conservatorship. People have even tried to get messages out of Britney through coded gestures like commenting “wear yellow if you need help!” on her posts (and yes, she indeed wore yellow in her next post).

Poor Britney was just a spunky, talented girl from a small town in Mississippi, who wanted to strut her stuff as a strong, powerful woman during the boyband era. Blame it on whatever you want- misogyny, public scrutiny, or paparazzi bullies, Britney was continuously prodded deeper into an unhealthy mental state, and I don’t blame her one bit for getting feisty with that umbrella back in 2007.

Whether it’s “Baby One More Time” Britney, Red-Carpet Britney, “Circus” Britney, shaved-head Britney, or baby-momma Britney, the woman is a fearless warrior. I know in my heart the #FreeBritney movement has great potential, and we can get the badass, dancing queen back on her stage one day.
This is not just some washed up popstar I’m talking about… it’s Britney bitch!
