For the Love of Filler! - Thoughts on Cosmetic Alteration Trends

Writer's picture: Carly HCarly H

Remember when “getting work done” was something of a Hollywood trope that only the Kardashians did? Scroll through Instagram and TikTok today and you won’t think twice about everyone’s plumped peckers and perfect button noses. Maybe it’s just the algorithm talking, but how about the “countdown to my Botox” trend? It absolutely reels me in every time to see the final product!

As opposed to having big hair in the ’80s, having noticeably larger lips is a cosmetic trend that I believe will stay for quite a while. The global lip augmentation (or filler) market size was valued at $2.2 billion in 2019 and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 9.5% from 2020 to 2027, according to Grand View Research. Injections can cost anywhere between $600-$2500, depending on how many syringes of filler you want. Lip liner and that spicy lip-gloss that only leaves my lips incredibly chapped only go so far these days.

Another new procedure that absolutely intrigues me is the Bella-Hadid-inspired “fox-eye lift.” These almond-shaped, upturned eyes are all the rage, and I am absolutely here for this look. “Non-invasive [option] involves the injection of fillers and fat at the outer edge to elevate the brow,” explains Dr. Tsirbas. This has become a very popular option, as it lasts up to two years and does not involve surgery. This treatment and those similar costs around $1500.

Filler, injections, lifts, flips, tucks- the list goes on and on! Altering our appearance is becoming not only much easier but also much more common in our “filter-looking-no-filter” society. Do I think it is a good idea? Hell yeah, as long as you take precautions! Of course, God, Allah, Buddha, or whoever you choose to believe in or not put you on this earth in a body to inhabit. However, who is to say you can’t customize your earthly avatar however you want? I see no difference in dying your hair and getting tattoos.

With that said, and the E! show Botched can testify to this, getting carried away with these procedures and manipulations can cause serious health issues. To be honest, the over-polished, synthetic barbie-doll-wannabe look isn’t all that attractive either. But I’m not stopping you! Heck, if you want to just avoid all needles and knives altogether, you could go the prosthetic route like the Weeknd.

So, until I come into some serious money, I’ll sadly have to hold off on the cosmetic treatments. One day when I’m rich and famous I can have the voluptuous lips I dream of. But never forget people- you’re not ugly, just poor.
